Pre-Operative instructions

To help minimize the liver patients are instructed to follow a 10-day liquid diet or as directed by the surgeon, prior to surgery date. This liquid diet focuses on low carbohydrates and high protein, and will make surgery safer and easier. Below are items that included in this liquid diet.

  •  Milk- Skim or 1% only
  •  Cream Soups, strained
  •  Sugar-Free or low-sugar liquid supplements such as:
    • Carnation Instant breakfast
    • Atkins Protein Drink
    • Protein Supplement
  •  Slim Fast, Opti Fast, or generic store brand
  •  Low calorie yogurt
  •  Tea
  •  Water
  •  Sugar- Free Jello
  •  Buillon or broth

Items to stay away from include, but are not limited to:

  •  Milk Shakes
  •  Smoothies
  •  Pureed Fruit
  •  Sodas/Soft Drinks
  •  Ice Cream

Under anesthesia, the surgeon will make a small incision in the abdomen and use a laparoscope to guide the surgery. The stomach may simply be partitioned, or it may be divided into two parts.

After surgery, you will have belly pain and may experience tenderness and soreness from the incisions. It is recommended to avoid any strenuous activity for about 2-3 weeks. You may be able to resume normal physical activity in approximately 4-6 weeks. Please make arrangements with surgeon's office for follow appointment 2 weeks after surgery.

What to expect

Notify your doctor to report any of the following:

  •  Fevers and/or chills
  •  Redness, swelling, increasing pain, excessive bleeding, or discharge from the incision(s) site
  •  Severe nausea and/or vomiting
  •  Worsening abdominal pain
  •  Blood in stool
  •  Blood in urine
  •  Shortness of breath and/or chest pain
