Sleeve Gastrectomy

Description

Sleeve Gastrectomy

The sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical weight loss procedure in which they permanently remove a large portion of the stomach anywhere from 60-85% of the total stomach, and then reshaping the remaining portion into a sleeve-like structure. The primary features of the procedure are reducing the size of the stomach to only 25% of the original size, to restrict food intake while also reducing ghrelin hormones that stimulate appetite. The sleeve gastrectomy promotes weight loss both by limiting the size of the stomach (thus making the patient feel full sooner) and by slowing the digestion of the food from the stomach into the intestines.
