Surgery Overview

Lap Band Procedure Guide 2

On the day of the procedure general anesthesia will be given, and small incisions will be made in the belly area where they will insert a silicone band and wrap it around the upper part of your stomach to form a ring.

An access port will be left under the skin to make adjustments to the band if needed in long-term. During surgery, the band is not inflated. You will need to wait at least 4-6 weeks before the band is adjusted for weight loss.

What to expect

After surgery, you may need pain medicine to help with the discomfort and soreness. You will be encouraged to move around to help your body heal. For the first 2 weeks, your stomach can only handle small amount of liquids while you are healing. It is common to notice that bowel movements will not be regular after surgery. Try to avoid constipation and straining with bowel movements.

Please call your doctor if you have:

  •  Dizziness
  •  Shortness of breath
  •  Rapid pulse
  •  Minimal or no urine production
  •  Worsening abdominal pain
  •  Fever
  •  Vomiting
  •  Pus or any type of abnormal discharge from wound
